So we built the third option — a walk-in garden room where a cat gets the whole outdoors, minus the traffic, the coyotes and the neighbour's dog.
Built like a garden building
Kiln-dried solid fir, mortised and screwed — not stapled particle board in a wood-look wrap.
Walk all the way in
Both doors are full height with barrel bolts, so cleaning never means crawling.
Real corrugated metal
Pitched with an overhang, so rain runs off instead of soaking through felt and plywood.
Three levels to climb
Platforms and ramps at cat height, plus a wind-shielded corner that stays dry in a shower.
In the details
Every choice here exists because a cheaper one fails in the second winter.
Hardware cloth, batten-strapped at every edge. Chicken wire keeps birds in; it does not keep raccoons out.
Corrugated steel, pitched for runoff, extended past the frame so rain lands on grass and not on timber.
Solid barrel bolts on both full-height doors. A raccoon can work a hook-and-eye. It cannot work these.
Natural untreated fir shelves and ramps, positioned where a cat actually wants to sit — high, warm, and watching.
The mesh is fine enough that a paw and a small hand can meet through it — and strong enough that nothing else gets in.
