A Fernstead Catio CW01 standing in a blooming backyard garden, a woman laughing as her cat steps out

Fernstead · Catio CW01

Indoor cat.
Outdoor life.

Seventy-six inches of sunshine, grass and birdsong — with a roof over it, a lock on it, and no road anywhere near it.

An indoor cat lives 15 years.
An outdoor cat lives three.
Nobody should have to choose.

So we built the third option — a walk-in garden room where a cat gets the whole outdoors, minus the traffic, the coyotes and the neighbour's dog.

Every angle

Built like a garden building

Kiln-dried solid fir, mortised and screwed — not stapled particle board in a wood-look wrap.

Two doors

Walk all the way in

Both doors are full height with barrel bolts, so cleaning never means crawling.

The roof

Real corrugated metal

Pitched with an overhang, so rain runs off instead of soaking through felt and plywood.

Inside

Three levels to climb

Platforms and ramps at cat height, plus a wind-shielded corner that stays dry in a shower.

In the details

The parts you only notice in year three

Every choice here exists because a cheaper one fails in the second winter.

A hand resting on the galvanized mesh as a cat's nose presses through from inside

19-gauge galvanized mesh

Hardware cloth, batten-strapped at every edge. Chicken wire keeps birds in; it does not keep raccoons out.

Close-up of the pitched corrugated metal roof edge with its overhang

A roof with an overhang

Corrugated steel, pitched for runoff, extended past the frame so rain lands on grass and not on timber.

Hands sliding open the barrel bolt latch on the full-height door

Bolts, not hooks

Solid barrel bolts on both full-height doors. A raccoon can work a hook-and-eye. It cannot work these.

A ginger cat asleep on a natural wood platform inside the catio

Platforms at cat height

Natural untreated fir shelves and ramps, positioned where a cat actually wants to sit — high, warm, and watching.

A laughing little girl touching the mesh as a cat reaches a paw toward her

Close enough to touch. Safe enough to leave.

The mesh is fine enough that a paw and a small hand can meet through it — and strong enough that nothing else gets in.

It arrives in two boxes.
Each one under 50 lb.

No freight appointment. No pallet abandoned at the end of your driveway. Every panel is laser-marked to match a full-colour printed manual, with a QR code to a build video. Two people, about forty-five minutes.

A family on a picnic blanket beside the catio, cats watching from the platforms

The backyard, finally shared.

Fernstead builds the structures that make a garden work for everyone who lives there — the two-legged and the four-legged both.
